Used as a promotional tool, headshot photographs are shots that enable actors to find work.   In many ways they can be considered a kind of calling card that possesses the job of bringing forth certain aspects.  Good headshots should show what you look like, display your personality, and they should be both creative and engaging.

Headshots are used by many in the entertainment industry and in most cases they are what land you an audition; therefore, their importance should not be underestimated.  When looking at their task in this light, the role of headshots for actors becomes similar to that of a resume for regular professionals.  Nobody will consider casting you unless the right photograph blows the door open for you.

There is no way around it, no actor headshots equates to no enthusiasm and no work.  Consequently, do not underestimate their top priority to the business.

Tips on Posing for Headshots

Some thought and preparation needs to go into getting a perfect pose for the photographs because you only get one shot to make a great first impression. You want to make sure that in the end they will land you that role you have always dreamed of. Some tips by our experts who know how to take the highest quality headshots include:

(1)   Look Natural:  Your best asset as a performer is your individuality.  Taking headshots is not the time for you to transform into a beauty pageant contestant.  When you walk through the door for the audition, the casting directors want to see the person that was in the headshot.  Therefore, be and look like your natural self.

(2)   Personality:  Keep in mind that personality always wins over glamour.  Remember the casting director wants an actor for a specific role, be it a witty teenager, an overworked mom, or a foreign middle-aged Spaniard.  Do not represent someone other than yourself when having your headshots taken.

(3)   Eyes:  Remember that saying, “the eyes are the windows to the soul?”  Indeed, that essential spark in your eyes will grab attention and say that there is a story behind you.  When it comes to headshots you want to think about the viewer looking at you and you looking at the viewer.  Making that connection is important for effective photographs.

(4)   Relax: It is best to be natural and candid.  If you are not relaxed during the shots it will show in the photographs.  Leading to tip #5:

(5)   Avoid Irritants: A headshot is a professional tool that needs some planning.  Avoid late nights, alcohol, and extra caffeine that can take a toll on your skin and overall vibrancy.  Exhaustion and dehydration will show through in the shots and therefore, preparing for the big day of the shoot is utterly essential.  Make sure you are well rested and properly nourished.

(6)   Simple Accessories:  More often than not all accessories, including necklaces, hair pieces, scarves, and earrings serve as distractions.  In some cases, stud earrings are the extent that may be acceptable, but there is where the line is drawn. The rest will draw the viewer’s attention away from you.

(7)   Simple Clothing: As mentioned already, the focus should be you; therefore opt for solid colors (a great rule of thumb is to match a shirt with your eye color) and away from patterns and bold prints.  In addition, do not show a lot of skin, which means guys should keep their shirts on and gals should show minimal cleavage.

(8)   Simple Make-up:  The recommendation is that it is essential enough to hire a make-up artist, preferably one who understands the importance of headshots.  It is not a good idea to avoid make-up altogether, but definitely do not pile it on either; remember simple, natural, and look like yourself on a great day.

(9)   Simple Hair:  Avoid any drastic hair color changes or hair styles, which will probably be difficult to once again attain when it comes time to go for the audition.   Once again, think classy, nicely groomed, and natural.

(10) Kind of Work:  Give some consideration about what kind of acting work you want to ultimately do in order to determine the setting and amount of lighting for the photographs.  Professional photographers can help you decide.

(11) En-route to the Shoot:  Do not actually wear the clothing you plan to be photographed in on your way to the studio.  Anything could happen – spilling a drink, getting a tear, becoming wrinkled.  Instead, change at the location.

(12) Outfit Changes:  It is best to have a few different outfits with you on the day of shoot.  Six is a good number.
